With those first rays of sunshine, and just a hint of warmth out there, it’s finally time to delve into the new looks for the season ahead.

Let’s start with the colours. According to Pantone THE colour of the year is Radiant Orchid – a gorgeous bright pink-to-purple. But there will be other choices. Sandy tones of nude, yellows with a touch of lime, softened oranges, peppery corals, calm and clean pale blues, spicy reds, nostalgic and dreamy purples and warm sunshiny blues.

‘New’ silhouettes will include full skirts of all lengths, longer options with a nod to the flapper era and cold shoulder tops. With a choice of strapless, sleeveless, one shouldered, off the shoulder or with slashed sleeves, there’s an option for everyone. And the good news? Just about every woman’s shoulders are slim when seen from the correct angle. Find the right cut for you and flash that flesh with confidence.

Pretty pastels will be everywhere but worn in a crisp tailored way, or with touches of metallic. Pinks of all kind, mint greens, powder blues and delicate lilacs abound.

Last year’s florals are bolder this year, in tropical colours and featuring more exotic blooms.

For those who avoid florals at all costs, try the new pop-arts which are bolder, brighter and entirely unapologetic.

Winter’s punk heritage look has become summer’s grunge with an ‘80s New Romantic twist. While Boho has taken on a ‘70s hippie feel. Think Birkenstocks, flowing skirts and a touch of fringing.

Sportswear, too, has taken on a new look with a luxe mood in soft and elegant style. Team comfy marls with a hint of glimmer and a touch of sparkle, wafts of ruffles and nearly-matte sequins.

Slogan tees are back with a bang as is the biker jacket that takes on an alternate personality in just about any colour bar black.

To go with all this newness, we need new nails too. This season, with the increasing popularity of gel manicures (including those you can do at home), we’ve included our favourite gel polishes from Red Carpet Manicure – our favourite gel polish brand, as well as standard polishes from some of our preferred manufacturers.

If you want to encapsulate spring in one polish try RCM Sunset Over Sag Harbor – a shimmery violet; Nails Inc’s Devonshire Row – a deep, rich lilac; or Ciate’s Spinning Teacup – a very girly pinky-purple.

For that ultimate cool look, try mint green. We like RCM Parisian Chic, Nails Inc Haymarket and Ciate Pepperminty.

For unapologetic look-at-me nails how about bright blue? RCM Drop Dead Gorgeous, Nails Inc Connaught Square and Ciate Holiday Blues should fit the bill.

For those times when we want to be taken seriously, without losing your fashion edge we choose a deep black-red like RCM I Own the Runway, Nails Inc Victoria and Ciate Paparazzi.

For the ultimate in professionalism why not choose a deep navy? How about RCM Midnight Affair, Nails Inc Kabaret, or the classic OPI Russian Navy.

For colours that go with everything. We choose either a milky coffee like RCM Expresso Yourself, or an oyster shell natural like Nails Inc Pall Mall.

Sheer tones like RCM Nervous With Anticipation, or mannequin-like nudes like those from the Nails Inc Perfect Nudes Collection (in four shades from porcelain pink Charlotte Street to dark camel Draycott Avenue) work for everyone, especially when its all about grooming, rather than making a big impact.

To celebrate those hot days that are sure to come (at some point, touch-wood), try a gorgeous bright like RCM Fuchsia Dreams – a bright bold, hot saturated pink or OPI’s AmazOn AmazOff.

And, for a more ladylike classic look try RCM Mulled Wine – a deep red with a hint of bright spice or OPI’s Scored A Goal in rich chocolate brown.
