An Invitation from An Invitation from “Our Mickleover”

By Nicola Rippon

“Our Mickleover” – it’s a simple name, a simple concept. We’re new, so here’s our introduction. Established with the aim of binding together our ever-expanding suburb to retain that ‘village’ feel, we’re a mixed bunch of folk. Some are members of local clubs or churches. Others work in or own local shops and businesses. Several have children attending our nurseries and schools, others teach those children. All of us have a vested interest in Mickleover as a community and that’s why we’re all keen to invite you to our first major event – the Mickleover Diamond Jubilee Fête on Monday 4th June at the Royal British Legion, off Western Road.

Proceedings start at 2pm with an official opening by former England and Derbyshire cricketer Dominic Cork. And the fun continues all afternoon until 6pm.

It’ll be a traditional village fête with all the family-friendly fun you remember.  From gymnastics and martial arts displays, school singers and a tug-of-war contest to a fancy dress competition for the kids. Test yourself with the beat-the-goalie challenge and then try something new under the watchful eye of the RBL’s bowls players. The more mischievous might prefer to hurl wet sponges at the poor unfortunates held in the stocks. It’s all in a good cause! The kids can enjoy face-painting, balloon modeling and the free bouncy castle, while parents browse stalls selling everything from teatime treats and toys to arts and crafts.

It’s sure to be one of the most memorable events of 2012. But it won’t be the only one. April saw a Bunny Hunt for kids and autumn promises a Scarecrow Festival. We’re developing an annual programme of events. Who knows, this time next year, we might be organising a seaside fiesta. ‘Mickleover-beside-the-Sea’? Why not?

In the meantime we hope you’ll join us in June. After all, Our Mickleover is your Mickleover too!
