NAIL IT EVERY TIME!

AUTUMN-WINTER 2013/14

Stripped down to its basics, nails are nude, bare or oxblood. Pick one of those styles and you're guaranteed to have nails that go with every fashion look for the entire season. And if you're not remotely interested in any variations of colour, then you may read no further and perhaps instead go and tend to that last bit of ironing … but wait, if you're taking the time to read this, it stands to reason that you're the kind of person who likes colour, who relishes colour and variety and wants to know what textures, what nail art effects,  lengths, shapes and brand new finishes we have to look forward to.

So here, from one nail-polish-a-holic to another, is the best of Autumn-Winter 2013-14 in a teeny little bottle of gorgeousness … oh, and a few sparkly bits too.

NUDE AND NATURAL

milky beiges, near-to-naked pinks, gloss, slight shimmery sheens. v important that cuticles are in perfect condition and nails filed and painted perfectly.Just enough colour to make the less than perfect nail look just that.  It goes with absolutely everything, but looks particularly good with embellished clothes and the Heritage look.

We like: OPI Nail Envy - a clear gloss with treatment.

Nails Inc Elizabeth Street - a milky pale.

Red Carpet Manicure in Camera Shy - a ivory sheer gloss.

BLACKS

Perfectly manicured, glossy, jet black nails always look good, whether on fingers or toes. No longer the preserve of the goth or emo, black nails are classic and gorgeous. But beware. Done well they look expensive. Chipped, peeling or badly applied onto dry cuticles and they look, well, just the opposite.

We like: Nails Inc Black Taxi - patent black.

Red Carpet Manicure Stretch Black Limo

Nails Inc Sloane Square - glittery black with an edge.

REDS

THE perennial classic. Bold, beautiful confident red nails are simply the go-to nail for just about any occasion. And, even for the shy and retiring, there's a red for everyone. And don't be afraid to try unexpected combinations. Bright tomato red can look stunning with pale blush pinks.

We like: OPI First Date At The Golden Gate - a shimmering bright ruby.

Nails Inc Tate - a classic deep red

Red Carpet Manicure Runway Red - a mid modern red.

METALLICS

From the sheerest metallic sheen to foil-effect full coverage metals in antique golds, pewters and rose gold. Particularly suited to the Rebel and the Modern Ladylike trends.

We like: Nails Inc Foils in King's Road, South Kensington, and Chelsea Bridge - rose, yellow & white  metals.

OPI Peace and Love and OPI - a holographicy blend of sage and aubergine which changes from     steel blue to purple.

DARKS

Always glamourous and groomed. Suits lots of looks from Modern Ladylike, Heritage, Winter Garden, Russian Doll and Dark Romantics. Greys, black cherries, deepest forest green, dark navy, plums, burgundies.

We like: Nails Inc Regent Street - a glossy grape.

Nails Inc St Martin's Lane - a deep wine.

              OPI A-Piers To Be Tan - a chocolately-toffee.

Nails Inc Oxford Street - a rich toffee.

BRIGHTS

Very bold and bright, even neon, colours look to be the surprise hit of the new season. Cheerful, juicy brights. Very easy to get into because you can simply pick out one bright colour from your outfit. Perhaps a bold block colour from Modern Ladylike, the colour of a bold flower from Winter Garden, or even a small highlight colour from Russian Doll. Alternatively, when you're wrapped up in a heavy winter coat, what could be better than a splash of cheerful colour peeping out from the ends of your sleeves?

We like: Red Carpet Manicure Paparazzi - a bold pink.

Nails Inc Southwark - a vibrant cobalt blue.

Nails Inc Old Bond Street - vivacious violet.

CREATIVES

You can now embellish your nails at home with all manner of wonderful jewels, studs, beads, feathers and sequins. From the wildest decor-heavy nail to the subtle jewell or two on a ring finger mani, everything goes. And there are fabulous polishes in all sorts of different finishes. You can use matte topcoats to create contrast patterns. Or use Nails Inc leather polishes for an edgy look. This year OPI have their matte-with-a-twinkle Liquid Sand finish. Companies like Ciate now offer their Feathered Manicure, and both they and Nails Inc offer Denim finishes. And there are studs and stitching effects for  added authenticity. Nails Inc have their Nail Graffiti polishes for that modern art look, while gel polish brand Red Carpet Manicure have kits with jewels and crystals  and well as special effects. The advantage of this, for those of you who have invested in an LED-curing polish system, is that the polish will not dry until you put it under the light, so you have all the time in the world to get the look just the way you want it.

We like: Brands like Red Carpet Manicure, Ciate, Nails Inc.
